An eight-foot Burmese python found under a Freehold shed had recently swallowed a large opossum, prompting rescue efforts and warnings about releasing exotic pets.

A quiet backyard in Freehold turned into the scene of an unusual animal rescue after an enormous Burmese python was discovered hiding beneath a resident’s shed.
The snake, measuring approximately 8 feet long, was found underneath the structure, prompting the Monmouth County SPCA to send animal control officers to investigate. Because the python was difficult to reach, a local contractor helped remove part of the shed floor so rescuers could safely reach and capture it.
But the biggest surprise came after the snake was taken for examination.
Veterinary staff noticed a large bulge in the python’s body and conducted X-rays. The images revealed that the snake had recently swallowed a large opossum.
The rescued python was placed in a secure enclosure while officials began arranging a suitable permanent home. The Monmouth County SPCA is working with reptile specialists to find an experienced handler with the appropriate permits and facilities to care for the animal.
The discovery has also prompted officials to remind exotic-pet owners about the serious consequences of releasing non-native animals into the environment.
Burmese pythons are not native to New Jersey. If released, exotic reptiles can potentially prey on native wildlife and domestic animals while disrupting local ecosystems. They may also be unable to survive properly in New Jersey’s climate.
Animal officials say people who can no longer care for exotic pets should contact a qualified rescue organization, shelter or appropriate authority rather than abandoning the animal outdoors.
The Freehold rescue is a striking example of how an unusual exotic pet can unexpectedly become a wildlife and public-safety concern. What appeared to be a mysterious animal hiding beneath an ordinary backyard shed turned out to be an eight-foot predator—and an unexpected reminder that exotic animals require specialized, responsible care.
The python’s future will depend on finding a legal and experienced caretaker capable of providing the space, equipment and expertise needed to house such a large reptile safely.
