New Jersey’s warm and sunny weekend is expected to end with thunderstorms and possible flash flooding Sunday night as forecasters urge residents to prepare for changing weather conditions.

Warm Weekend Followed by Stormy Weather

New Jersey residents are expected to enjoy a warm and pleasant weekend before the weather takes a significant turn on Sunday night. After several days of sunshine, comfortable summer temperatures and mainly dry conditions, forecasters say a new weather system is likely to move across the region, bringing showers, thunderstorms and the possibility of heavy rainfall.

The changing weather pattern marks the end of a calm weekend and could lead to difficult travel conditions in parts of the state. While many communities will experience dry weather during the day on Sunday, conditions are expected to become increasingly unstable as the evening progresses.

Flash Flood Threat Returns to Parts of New Jersey

Meteorologists are closely monitoring the approaching system because some thunderstorms could produce heavy rain within a short period. If intense downpours develop, localized flash flooding may occur, particularly in areas that typically experience drainage problems.

Low-lying neighborhoods, underpasses, small streams and roads with poor drainage are considered the most vulnerable locations. Urban areas, where rainwater often collects quickly, could also experience temporary flooding if rainfall becomes intense enough.

Although the flash flood threat is not expected to affect every part of the state, weather experts say residents should remain alert because thunderstorms can develop rapidly and rainfall amounts may vary from one location to another.

Heavy Rain Could Create Travel Problems

Officials are urging motorists to exercise caution if traveling Sunday night, as heavy rain can quickly reduce visibility and create dangerous driving conditions.

Roads may become slippery during the first stages of rainfall, while heavier downpours could cause water to accumulate on highways, local streets and intersections. Drivers are advised to reduce their speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid driving through flooded roadways.

Even shallow floodwater can make roads unsafe, and officials remind motorists that it is difficult to judge the depth of standing water. Choosing an alternate route is often the safest option when roads become flooded.

Thunderstorms May Bring Lightning and Gusty Winds

In addition to heavy rainfall, the approaching weather system may produce frequent lightning and periods of gusty winds. While widespread severe storms are not currently forecast, meteorologists say a few thunderstorms could become stronger depending on how atmospheric conditions develop Sunday evening.

Strong wind gusts could blow around loose outdoor objects and bring down small tree branches in isolated areas. Lightning also remains a significant hazard during thunderstorms, making it important for residents to move indoors as soon as thunder is heard.

People planning outdoor activities, sporting events or family gatherings later on Sunday are encouraged to keep a close eye on updated weather forecasts.

Residents Urged to Monitor Weather Updates

Emergency officials are encouraging residents to stay informed as the forecast continues to evolve. Keeping weather alerts enabled on mobile phones and following updates from local authorities can help people respond quickly if warnings are issued.

Residents living in flood-prone neighborhoods should prepare for the possibility of rapidly changing conditions. Clearing storm drains, securing outdoor furniture and having emergency supplies ready can help reduce risks if heavy rain develops.

    Preparing for Changing Conditions

Although New Jersey is expected to enjoy pleasant weather for much of the weekend, the outlook for Sunday night serves as a reminder that summer weather can change quickly. Forecasters say most areas are unlikely to experience prolonged severe weather, but localized heavy rainfall could still create hazardous conditions in some communities.

Authorities recommend avoiding unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain, remaining aware of weather alerts and adjusting outdoor plans if thunderstorms approach. By staying informed and taking simple safety precautions, residents can better prepare for the unsettled weather expected to arrive at the end of the weekend.
