US Debt Hits Historic $40 Trillion
The United States national debt has surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, marking a major financial milestone and raising concerns about the country’s long term economic future.
The record was reached on Wednesday, just five months after the US debt crossed $39 trillion in March. It had reached $38 trillion in October, showing how quickly government borrowing has increased.
Rising Costs Put Pressure on Economy
Defense spending, Social Security, Medicare and rising interest payments are among the biggest contributors to federal spending. The growing debt is also increasing borrowing costs for Americans, affecting areas such as mortgages and car loans.
Economists warn that businesses may also have less money available for investment, which could contribute to slower wage growth and higher prices for goods and services.
Trump Administration Defends Spending Plans
The Trump administration says it is working to reduce government waste and fraud while boosting economic growth.
White House spokesman Kush Desai said the administration wants to improve the country’s debt to GDP ratio by cutting unnecessary spending and encouraging stronger economic activity.
However, fiscal experts argue that the current pace of borrowing is not sustainable. Margaret Spellings of the Bipartisan Policy Center warned that rising debt could create tougher choices for Americans in the future.
Debt Limit Could Become Another Challenge
The US currently has a legal limit on how much money the federal government can borrow. The Bipartisan Policy Center estimates that the country could reach its $41.1 trillion debt limit between late winter and mid summer of 2027.
Congress would then need to raise or suspend the limit again to allow further borrowing.
The latest figures have renewed concerns about the United States’ financial position compared with other developed economies.
