Vivienne Jolie-Pitt Moves Closer to Removing Pitt From Her Name
Brad Pitt’s daughter Vivienne has taken another major step toward removing her father’s surname from her legal name, but the change is not official yet. A court hearing in November could determine what happens next.
The 18 year old has asked a Los Angeles County court to change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. She filed the petition in July, shortly after turning 18, and listed the reason for the requested change simply as “personal.”
Vivienne Completes a Key Legal Requirement
The latest development came after Vivienne completed an important step in California’s name change process.
Her legal notice was published in the Los Angeles Daily Journal once a week for four consecutive weeks, appearing on July 24, July 31, August 7 and August 14.
The publication is a required part of the process and formally puts her request on public notice.
But the newspaper notice does not mean the name change has already been approved.
Vivienne remains legally Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt while her petition is pending.
November 2 Could Be the Deciding Moment
The next major development is scheduled for November 2, 2026.
That is when Vivienne’s petition is set to come before a judge. Any opposition to the requested change must be submitted through the legal process before the hearing.
If the court approves her petition, she could officially become Vivienne Marcheline Jolie.
Until then, the “Pitt” surname remains part of her legal name.
There is still one question the public does not have an answer to: Why does Vivienne want to remove it?
Her court filing does not provide a detailed explanation. It simply lists the reason as “personal.”
She Has Already Used the Jolie Name
The legal petition is not the first time Vivienne has publicly gone by Jolie.
In 2024, she was credited as Vivienne Jolie in the Playbill for The Outsiders, the Broadway production she worked on with her mother, Angelina Jolie.
Her proposed name would also preserve “Marcheline,” honoring her late maternal grandmother, actress Marcheline Bertrand.
If approved, the change would therefore remove “Pitt” while keeping the rest of her name intact.
Vivienne Follows Several of Her Siblings
Vivienne is also not the first of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s children to pursue a name change.
Shiloh legally changed her name to Shiloh Jolie in 2024. More recently, Zahara and Maddox have also taken legal steps to remove “Pitt” from their names, with their own hearings scheduled for September.
Zahara has also publicly used the Jolie surname, including at her 2026 college graduation, while Maddox has pursued his own legal name change process.
The series of legal moves has inevitably drawn attention to the complicated history surrounding Pitt and Jolie’s family, although Vivienne herself has not publicly given a detailed explanation for her decision.
The Final Answer Is Still Months Away
For now, Vivienne’s requested name remains just that: a request.
She has filed the petition, completed the required newspaper publication and already used Vivienne Jolie professionally. But only a court ruling can make the change official.
That decision is now scheduled for November 2.
If the judge approves her petition, the change will go beyond the name she has used publicly and become her official legal identity.
Until that day, Vivienne is still Jolie-Pitt on paper, but she is now one court decision away from becoming Vivienne Jolie.
