Can Chris Christie Revive New Jersey’s Struggling GOP?

Former Gov. Chris Christie is re-entering New Jersey Republican politics, raising money and urging candidates to focus on state issues as the GOP confronts a changing electorate and strong Democratic competition.

TRENTON, N.J. — Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is returning to the state’s political spotlight, raising money for Republican candidates while pressing the party to rethink how it competes in a state where Democrats have maintained a strong position.

Christie, who served as governor from 2010 to 2018, has argued that New Jersey Republicans have become increasingly disconnected from voters and need to broaden their appeal beyond the party’s traditional base. His strategy emphasizes reaching independents and Democrats who could be receptive to Republican candidates and messages focused on New Jersey rather than national political battles.

Christie’s renewed involvement comes as Republicans look for openings in a state where Democrats continue to hold significant political advantages.

One such opening has emerged around Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s administration following an investigation involving Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell. An outside law firm has been examining allegations of inappropriate behavior involving women and possible ethics violations. Caldwell has denied the allegations and has been cooperating with the inquiry.

Republicans have used the controversy to criticize the administration’s handling of the investigation and call for greater transparency. Sherrill has offered limited public details while the inquiry continues.

At the same time, Republicans face competitive races of their own.

In New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District, Republican Rep. Tom Kean Jr. is facing Democratic challenger Rebecca Bennett. A September poll commissioned by Insider NJ and conducted by StimSight Research found Bennett with 47% support among likely voters to Kean’s 42%.

The survey of 498 likely voters was conducted Sept. 8-12 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.7 percentage points. The poll therefore measures the state of the race at that time rather than establishing an election outcome.

The survey also found that voters identified Social Security and Medicare, immigration, grocery and household affordability, health care costs and concerns about President Donald Trump among their leading issues. Kean was more likely than Bennett to be viewed as someone who follows national party leadership, according to the poll.

For Christie, the question of how closely New Jersey Republicans should align themselves with national Republican politics is central to his argument.

Christie was once a prominent Trump ally and chaired Trump’s opioid commission during the first Trump administration. Their relationship later deteriorated, with Christie becoming a vocal Trump critic. Christie unsuccessfully sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.

He has since argued that trying to influence Trump from inside the administration was a mistake and that New Jersey Republicans need a political identity centered more directly on the state’s voters and issues.

That approach faces resistance within the Republican Party, where Trump remains a major influence. Christie’s own standing among Republicans has also changed since his time as governor. A 2023 Fairleigh Dickinson University poll found that only 25% of New Jersey Republicans said they would consider voting for Christie in a potential Republican presidential primary, while 70% said they would not.

Political scientist Dan Cassino, director of the FDU Poll, has previously questioned whether the electorate that supported Christie as governor remains the same as the one Republicans must reach today.

Christie’s return therefore puts a broader question before New Jersey Republicans: how much of the party’s future should be shaped by national Republican politics, and how much should be built around a distinct New Jersey-focused agenda?

For Christie, the renewed political role provides an opportunity to make that argument directly to candidates, donors, and voters. Whether the party embraces his approach remains an open question as Republicans prepare for another competitive election cycle.
