Ed Sheeran is facing criticism after Macklemore was removed from his tour following pro-Palestinian remarks, prompting several supporting acts to withdraw and sparking debate over political speech in music.

PHILADELPHIA — Ed Sheeran’s “Loop Tour” has become the center of a growing dispute over politics, artistic expression and the role of musicians after rapper Macklemore was removed from the tour following pro-Palestinian remarks at a New Jersey concert.

Macklemore performed at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Sept. 4 and made a speech supporting Palestinians, including saying “Free Palestine.” He was subsequently removed from the U.S. leg of Sheeran’s tour after several venue owners objected to his participation, according to the tour promoter.

Sheeran addressed the controversy in an Instagram statement, saying Macklemore’s removal was “the promoter’s decision, not mine.” He said he had tried to find a solution with venues but that their decision was ultimately final.

The British singer also said he generally avoids political statements because his concerts attract audiences of different ages and backgrounds.

“I respect Macklemore’s strength of purpose to stand up and shout for what he believes,” Sheeran said, while maintaining that he wanted his concerts to remain a place where people from different backgrounds could come together.

    Supporting acts withdraw
The controversy intensified when several musicians associated with Sheeran’s tour announced that they would no longer participate.

Finneas, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe withdrew from upcoming dates, while Sheeran’s longtime backing band Beoga also announced its departure. The artists cited different reasons, but their statements expressed support for Macklemore and Palestinians.

Finneas said artists should not be silenced for speaking about people they believe are being oppressed. Lukas Graham said musicians should be able to discuss war, civilian deaths and children affected by conflict.

Beoga, which has worked with Sheeran for more than a decade, said it believed in dialogue and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

The departures left Sheeran’s remaining U.S. shows without the originally announced supporting lineup.

    Venue owners and Macklemore dispute
Macklemore has said several U.S. venues told the tour promoter they would not host shows featuring him after his comments about Palestine.

Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, defended the decision, citing Macklemore’s recent comments and what Kraft described as a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery. Macklemore has rejected accusations of antisemitism and argued that criticism of Israel should not be equated with hatred of Jewish people.

The Israeli-American Council had also launched a petition calling for Macklemore to be removed from the tour.

    Sheeran continues tour
Sheeran had been scheduled to resume the U.S. leg of his tour in Philadelphia on Sept. 19.

Since the controversy began, some ticket holders have sought refunds, while the dispute has generated reactions from musicians, fans and advocacy groups. An Irish radio station, Classic Hits Radio, also said it would stop playing Sheeran’s music for the foreseeable future in solidarity with Irish musicians who withdrew from the tour.

The controversy has put Sheeran’s stated preference for keeping politics out of his concerts under renewed scrutiny, while supporters of Macklemore have framed the dispute as a question of whether artists should be free to speak publicly about international conflicts.

At the same time, Sheeran has maintained that there can be different approaches to promoting peace and that he does not want his concerts to become political forums.

Update: At his Sept. 19 Philadelphia concert, Sheeran subsequently addressed the Gaza conflict publicly, describing the situation there as “catastrophic and unjustifiable” and criticizing restrictions on artists speaking about political issues.

    Why it matters
The dispute has expanded beyond one performer’s removal from a tour into a wider discussion involving artistic freedom, venue control, political expression and the boundaries between entertainment and activism. The withdrawals by several supporting artists have also changed the lineup of one of the year’s major stadium tours.
