Fatal Highway Collision Claims Young Rider’s Life

A 27-year-old motorcyclist has died following a single-vehicle crash on a highway ramp connecting Route 23 South to Interstate 80 East in Wayne Township, New Jersey.

The collision happened during the early hours of the morning, prompting a large emergency response and forcing authorities to close the ramp for several hours while investigators examined the scene.

    Crash Occurred Before Dawn

Police said officers were dispatched shortly after 1 a.m. following reports of a motorcycle crash.

According to the preliminary investigation, the rider was travelling along the ramp when the motorcycle struck a guardrail on the right side of the roadway. The impact threw the rider from the bike, causing severe injuries.

    Victim Dies After Hospitalisation

Authorities identified the deceased as Nicholas E. Coombs, 27, of Montclair.

Emergency crews found him unconscious at the scene and transported him to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where doctors later pronounced him dead despite medical efforts.

Multiple Agencies Assisted at the Scene

The response involved officers from the Wayne Police Department along with firefighters and emergency medical personnel.

Investigators from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit documented evidence while the New Jersey State Police assisted with traffic control during the closure.

    Road Closure Affected Morning Traffic

The ramp remained closed until approximately 7:20 a.m. as investigators completed their examination and road crews cleared the area.

Traffic was diverted to alternate routes during the investigation, causing delays for early-morning commuters before the roadway was reopened.

    Police Continue Examining the Cause

The Wayne Police Traffic Bureau is leading the investigation into the fatal crash.

Investigators are analysing physical evidence and reconstructing the incident to determine exactly what happened before the motorcycle struck the guardrail. Officials have not yet confirmed whether speed, mechanical issues or road conditions played any role.

    Witnesses Asked to Come Forward

Authorities are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or travelled through the area around the time of the incident.

Police believe additional eyewitness accounts or dashcam footage may help establish a clearer timeline of events and assist investigators in completing their report.

Motorcycle Accidents Often Result in Serious Injuries

Road safety specialists note that motorcyclists face significantly greater risks than occupants of passenger vehicles because they have very little physical protection during a collision.

Crashes involving roadside barriers or guardrails can become especially dangerous, even when riders are wearing protective equipment.

Summer Months Bring More Riders to the Roads

The warmer months traditionally see increased motorcycle traffic across New Jersey highways.

Transportation officials regularly remind riders to wear certified helmets, maintain safe speeds, remain visible to other motorists and approach highway ramps carefully, where sharp curves can increase the risk of losing control.

Drivers of passenger vehicles are also encouraged to stay alert for motorcycles when merging, changing lanes or entering busy highways.

Community Reflects on Another Tragic Loss

The fatal crash has left family members, friends and members of the local riding community mourning the loss of a young motorcyclist.

Incidents like this also renew conversations about highway safety and the importance of responsible driving and riding during the busy summer travel season.

    Authorities Emphasise Ongoing Road Safety

Police say the investigation remains active and additional findings will be released if new information becomes available.

Officials continue urging all road users to obey speed limits, avoid distractions and remain attentive behind the wheel in an effort to reduce serious crashes and save lives on New Jersey’s highways.
