A devastating Utah flash flood killed five members of one family during a hiking trip, leaving their daughter as the only survivor while investigators examine the tragedy.

    WEBDESK – NJNEWSLINE

A heartbreaking flash flood in southern Utah has claimed the lives of five members of the same family, leaving their daughter as the sole survivor. The family was enjoying a hiking and canyoneering trip when sudden floodwaters swept through a canyon, turning what began as a summer adventure into an unimaginable tragedy.

    Family Trip Ends in Heartbreak

The Long family had traveled to the Sunglow Campground near Bicknell, Utah, to spend time together exploring the area’s popular canyons.

Authorities said severe thunderstorms developed nearby, sending a powerful surge of floodwater through the canyon with little warning. The family was caught in the rapidly rising water before they had a chance to reach safety.

Fire Captain and His Family Among the Victims

Officials confirmed that the victims included Provo Fire Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina Long and their three young sons.

Their daughter survived because she was not part of the hiking trip, making her the only immediate family member left after the devastating accident.

    Massive Search Operation Follows Flood

Emergency crews launched an extensive search after receiving reports that people had been swept away by floodwaters.

Firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, search-and-rescue teams and volunteers worked through difficult conditions overnight. Three victims were located on the first day, while the remaining two were found after search efforts resumed the following morning.

Community Pays Tribute to the Long Family

The tragedy has deeply affected the Provo community, where Captain Long was widely respected for his service and leadership.

Colleagues described him as a dedicated firefighter who always put others first, while friends remembered Katrina Long as a caring mother whose kindness touched many lives.

    Support Grows for Surviving Daughter

Following the tragedy, family friends launched a fundraising campaign to help the surviving daughter with funeral costs and future expenses.

The appeal quickly gained support from people across Utah, with thousands expressing condolences and offering financial assistance during the family’s darkest moment.

Investigation Into the Flash Flood Continues

Authorities are working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal accident.

Investigators believe intense rainfall caused floodwaters to rise rapidly, but officials are continuing to review weather data and witness accounts before releasing a final report.

Flash Floods Remain a Serious Threat

Emergency officials continue reminding visitors that flash floods can develop within minutes, even if rain is falling several miles away.

Popular canyon destinations are especially vulnerable because narrow passages allow water to rise quickly, leaving little time for hikers to react.

    Safety Reminders for Outdoor Adventurers

Officials encourage hikers and campers to check weather forecasts before entering canyons and to leave immediately if storms are expected nearby.

Experts say understanding flash flood risks and following weather warnings can save lives during the busy summer hiking season.

    Utah Community Continues to Mourn

As tributes continue to pour in, the Long family’s loss has united communities across Utah in grief and support.

While investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, many hope the heartbreaking incident will raise awareness about the dangers of flash floods and encourage greater caution in canyon areas.
