Moderate rip current risk, rough surf and hazardous marine conditions are affecting the Jersey Shore today as officials urge beachgoers, swimmers and boaters to exercise extra caution.

Moderate Rip Current Risk Issued for the Jersey Shore

Beachgoers planning to visit the Jersey Shore are being urged to exercise caution after forecasters warned of a moderate risk of life-threatening rip currents along New Jersey’s coastline.

According to the latest Jersey Shore Report, hazardous surf conditions are expected throughout the day, increasing the danger of strong rip currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore. Officials stress that even experienced swimmers should only enter the water where lifeguards are present.

    Rough Surf Brings Marine Warnings

Marine conditions have also worsened, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Small Craft Advisory for coastal waters.

Forecasters expect strengthening south winds with gusts approaching 30 mph, while wave heights may range between 1 and 4 feet. These conditions could create hazardous situations for small boats and recreational watercraft operating near the shoreline.

Warm Weather Expected Despite Ocean Hazards

Although the ocean poses increased risks, pleasant summer weather is still expected to attract large crowds.

    Forecasts indicate:

    • Air temperatures between 77°F and 86°F
    • Ocean temperatures ranging from 72°F to 81°F
    • Warm conditions with periods of sunshine

Officials warn that favorable beach weather should not distract visitors from rapidly changing ocean conditions, particularly during the afternoon when winds may strengthen further.

    Boaters Urged to Stay Alert

Authorities are also advising recreational boaters to monitor marine forecasts before heading onto the water.

Increasing winds and rough seas may make navigation difficult, especially for smaller vessels. Boaters are encouraged to carry proper safety equipment and postpone trips if weather conditions deteriorate.

    Safety Remains the Top Priority

Emergency officials recommend several precautions for anyone visiting New Jersey beaches:

    • Swim only where lifeguards are on duty.
    • Never swim alone.
    • Obey warning flags and beach advisories.
    • If caught in a rip current, remain calm, swim parallel to shore, and signal for help.
    • Closely supervise children near the water.

Officials say following these simple safety measures can significantly reduce the risk of water-related emergencies.

    Officials Continue Monitoring Conditions

Weather conditions along the Jersey Shore can change quickly.

Residents, tourists, swimmers, and boaters are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts throughout the day and follow instructions from lifeguards, beach patrols, and emergency management officials before entering the ocean.
