A fatal crash on Route 202 in Raritan Borough, New Jersey, left one woman dead and prompted a major police investigation after the suspected driver of the second vehicle allegedly fled the scene. The collision occurred Monday morning at the intersection of Route 202 and First Avenue, forcing authorities to close the busy roadway for several hours while emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.

    Emergency Responders Arrived Quickly

Police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded within minutes after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle crash.

Emergency teams secured the area and assessed those involved in the collision. Despite rescue efforts, one victim was pronounced dead at the scene while investigators immediately began documenting evidence and examining the vehicles involved.

    Busy Highway Closed for Hours

Following the crash, Route 202 was shut down in both directions near First Avenue, creating significant traffic congestion during the morning commute.

Motorists were diverted to alternate routes while investigators processed the scene. Authorities advised drivers to avoid the area until the roadway was declared safe and reopened later in the day.

    Police Investigate Suspected Hit-and-Run

According to the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, the collision involved a Genesis SUV and an Acura SUV.

Officials confirmed that a woman from Bridgewater died as a result of the crash. Investigators also stated that the driver of the second vehicle allegedly left the scene after the collision, prompting a hit-and-run investigation. Law enforcement agencies are continuing efforts to identify and locate the individual.

    Investigation Continues

Detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, assisted by local police, are working to determine exactly how the crash occurred.

Authorities have not released additional information regarding possible criminal charges or publicly identified the suspected driver. Investigators are reviewing available evidence and asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from the area to come forward.

    Road Safety Concerns Renewed

The fatal incident has renewed concerns about safety along one of Somerset County’s busiest roadways.

Officials say the investigation remains active, and further information will be released once preliminary findings are completed. Police continue urging motorists to drive responsibly and remain at the scene following any traffic collision as required by law.
