Violet Hensley, the beloved “Whittlin’ Fiddler” and Silver Dollar City icon, has died at 109, leaving behind a century-spanning legacy in country music and Ozark craftsmanship for generations.

Country music has lost a remarkable link to its earliest traditions. Violet Hensley, the Arkansas-born fiddler and handmade fiddle maker affectionately known as the “Whittlin’ Fiddler,” died on August 7, 2026, at age 109.

The circumstances surrounding her death have not been publicly detailed, and no specific cause of death has been reported.

For decades, Hensley was a familiar face at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri, where she became known for making fiddles, playing music and sharing stories rooted in Ozark culture. She spent more than 50 years demonstrating her craft at the park and became one of its most recognizable traditional artisans.

A Family Tradition That Became Her Life’s Work

Born Violet Brumley on October 21, 1916, Hensley learned to carve and play the fiddle from her father, George Washington Brumley. Music became part of her life early, but family responsibilities eventually took priority.

After marrying, Hensley stepped away from music for 27 years while raising her nine children. She returned to fiddle-making and performing later in life, eventually turning skills learned from her father into a career that brought her national recognition.

Her connection to Silver Dollar City began in 1967. From there, her fiddle-making and performances helped introduce generations of visitors to traditional Ozark music and craftsmanship.

From the Ozarks to the Grand Ole Opry

Hensley’s career reached an extraordinary milestone in 2016, when she made her Grand Ole Opry debut at 99. She later returned to the legendary Nashville stage, adding one of the most unusual chapters to an already remarkable career.

Her talent also took her to national television. Hensley appeared on programs including The Beverly Hillbillies, The Art Linkletter Show, Captain Kangaroo, To Tell the Truth and Live with Regis and Kathie Lee.

In 2018, Hensley was inducted into the National Fiddler Hall of Fame at age 101. She had previously been recognized as an Arkansas Living Treasure for her contribution to the state’s traditional arts.

    Her Legacy Reached Beyond Music

Hensley’s importance was not limited to playing the fiddle. She helped preserve the hands-on tradition of making the instruments themselves, keeping an old Ozark craft visible for new generations.

She also documented her extraordinary journey in her autobiography, Whittlin’ and Fiddlin’ My Own Way: The Violet Hensley Story, published in 2014.

Her connection with the Arkansas community remained strong throughout her later years. In 2025, the city of Leslie honored her with Violet Hensley Day and presented her with the Key to the City, recognizing her lifelong contribution to traditional Ozark music and craftsmanship.

    Remembering the “Whittlin’ Fiddler”

Violet Hensley lived through more than a century of American history, but her legacy was never simply about reaching the age of 109.

It was about returning to a craft after raising a family, carrying her father’s knowledge into another generation and eventually taking that tradition from an Arkansas community to national television and the Grand Ole Opry.

Saving Country Music had described Hensley as the “oldest living country legend” before her death, reflecting the extraordinary length of her connection to traditional country and roots music.

Hensley leaves behind a legacy measured not only in years, but in instruments, performances, stories and traditions passed from one generation to another.

The “Whittlin’ Fiddler” is gone, but the musical heritage she spent her life preserving continues to echo through the Ozarks, and through the generations who learned to appreciate the sound of a handmade fiddle.
