A 76-year-old man has died after being struck by a private tour bus in Ridgefield, New Jersey, prompting an active investigation by authorities into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

The crash occurred Tuesday night near the intersection of Broad Avenue and Maple Avenue. Emergency responders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but he later died from his injuries.

Police said the incident happened at approximately 9:30 p.m., when officers from the Ridgefield Police Department responded to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.

Investigators confirmed that the pedestrian had been struck by a private tour bus, leading to a large emergency response in the area.

    Victim Succumbed to Critical Injuries

According to officials, the elderly man suffered severe injuries in the collision and was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite medical efforts, doctors were unable to save him. Authorities confirmed Wednesday morning that the 76-year-old later died from his injuries.

His identity has not yet been publicly released as officials continue notifying family members.

Authorities have also not disclosed whether the victim was crossing the roadway or walking nearby when the collision occurred.

    Driver Remained at the Scene

Investigators said the driver of the private tour bus stopped immediately after the collision and fully cooperated with responding officers.

Officials confirmed that the driver did not leave the scene and remained with investigators throughout the initial response.

Police also said the bus was carrying no passengers at the time of the incident. The driver was the only person inside the vehicle when the crash occurred.

Authorities have not announced any criminal charges or traffic citations in connection with the fatal crash.

    Investigation Now Underway

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Task Force has joined the Ridgefield Police Department in investigating the incident.

Detectives are expected to review witness statements, roadway conditions, surveillance footage and other evidence to determine exactly what happened before the collision.

Officials have released very few additional details while the investigation remains in its early stages.

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined.

    Questions Still Remain

Investigators have not confirmed whether speed, visibility, weather conditions or pedestrian movement played any role in the fatal collision.

Authorities have also not indicated whether mechanical issues or driver impairment are being considered as factors.

Officials say additional information will be released once detectives complete more of their investigation.

Pedestrian Safety Continues to Be a Concern

Fatal pedestrian crashes remain a growing concern in many communities across the United States.

Safety experts frequently encourage both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert, particularly during evening hours when reduced visibility increases crash risks.

Older adults are often among the most vulnerable road users because severe injuries are more likely when high-impact collisions occur.

Transportation officials continue encouraging motorists to slow down near intersections, obey speed limits and remain attentive to pedestrians crossing roadways.

    Community Awaits More Answers

Residents in Ridgefield are now awaiting further updates as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding Tuesday night’s tragedy.

The investigation remains active, and authorities have asked anyone with information about the collision to contact law enforcement.

For now, the death of the 76-year-old man serves as another reminder of the devastating consequences serious pedestrian crashes can have on families and local communities.

Officials say additional findings will be released after investigators complete their review of the evidence and determine whether any further action is warranted.
