Visitors heading to New Jersey beaches today should prepare for dangerous surf, strong rip currents and rough marine conditions as officials urge swimmers and boaters to exercise caution.

High Rip Current Risk Along the Jersey Shore

People planning to visit the Jersey Shore on Saturday, August 1, are being advised to stay careful because dangerous ocean conditions are continuing along the New Jersey coast.

The latest Jersey Shore Report says that the risk of rip currents is very high. These strong currents can quickly pull swimmers away from the shore, especially at beaches where lifeguards are not present. Officials are asking everyone to swim only at beaches with lifeguards on duty.

Rough Surf and Strong Winds Expected

    The weather forecast includes:

    • High rip current risk

    • Waves of 3 to 6 feet

    • Northeast winds between 20 and 28 mph, with stronger gusts at times

    • Rough and choppy surf conditions throughout the day

Because of these conditions, swimming, surfing and paddle boarding could become dangerous.

    Boaters Asked to Be Careful

A Small Craft Advisory is also in effect. Strong winds and rough seas can create problems for small boats. Authorities say that inexperienced boaters should avoid going into open waters until conditions improve.

    Safety Advice for Beach Visitors

Officials are sharing several important safety tips:

    • Swim only where lifeguards are present.

    • Do not swim alone.

    • If you are caught in a rip current, stay calm and float.

    • Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current.

    • Boaters should check the latest marine forecast before leaving.

    Check Conditions Before You Go

Many people are expected to visit New Jersey beaches this weekend despite the rough surf. Officials recommend checking weather, tide and ocean forecasts before traveling to the shore.

Beach visitors are also encouraged to follow warning flags and listen to lifeguards and local authorities throughout the day to stay safe.
