Serena and Alcaraz Knocked Out
Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz’s US Open mixed doubles journey has come to an end after just two matches, with the star duo losing in the quarterfinals at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The pair, who have a combined 30 Grand Slam singles titles, were defeated by fourth seeds Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli 5-4, 4-1.
Bencic and Cobolli, who won the mixed doubles title at Indian Wells, will now face Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils in the semifinals on August 26.
Strong Start for Star Duo
Despite their quarterfinal exit, Williams and Alcaraz made an impressive return to the mixed doubles competition. They defeated Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool 5-3, 4-1 in the opening round.
Playing in front of a packed and supportive Arthur Ashe Stadium, the pair quickly became one of the biggest attractions of the tournament.
Serena Returns to Flushing Meadows
The match marked Serena Williams’ first appearance at the US Open since 2022. The 44 year old has won six US Open singles titles and one mixed doubles title, which she claimed alongside Max Mirnyi in 1998.
Williams will not compete in the women’s singles tournament this year, meaning her mixed doubles campaign marks her only appearance at Flushing Meadows.
Alcaraz Prepares for Singles Return
For Alcaraz, the mixed doubles event served as his return to competitive tennis after missing time because of a wrist injury.
The seven time Grand Slam champion and defending US Open champion is set to compete in the singles tournament, which begins August 30.
Alcaraz is now waiting to discover his first round opponent as he prepares to make his return to the singles court.
