More than 6,000 New Jersey homes and businesses were still without electricity Thursday morning after powerful overnight storms knocked out power to tens of thousands across the state and caused multiple road closures.

Strong thunderstorms swept across New Jersey late Wednesday, downing power lines, damaging utility infrastructure, and disrupting travel in several counties.
According to utility companies, more than 24,000 customers lost power at the height of the storms Wednesday night. By 7:10 a.m. Thursday, outage numbers had fallen significantly, though thousands were still awaiting restoration.
The remaining outages included approximately 4,865 customers served by Jersey Central Power & Light, 1,120 customers under Public Service Enterprise Group, and 486 customers served by Atlantic City Electric.
Emergency crews continued working Thursday morning to clear downed wires and damaged utility poles that forced several major road closures across the state.
According to New Jersey traffic officials, Route 1 in Edison remained closed in both directions near Woodbridge Avenue due to fallen wires.
Authorities also reported two full closures on Route 29 caused by downed poles — one near Bulls Island Recreation Area in Delaware Township and another on Fiddlers Creek Road in Hopewell Township.
In Lacey Township, Route 9 south remained shut down north of Sunrise Boulevard because of storm-related wire damage.
Despite the severe weather, NJ Transit reported no weather-related delays Thursday morning.
Forecasters from the National Weather Service said cloudy conditions, scattered showers, and temperatures in the 60s are expected across New Jersey throughout Thursday.
