Barnegat Bay has witnessed another heartbreaking boating accident, with a 26-year-old man losing his life just days after two young children were killed in a separate crash on the same waterway.
The latest collision happened shortly before 11 p.m. on Saturday near Toms River, when a 32-foot Boston Whaler carrying five people crashed into an Intracoastal Waterway channel marker. What started as a routine summer outing quickly turned into another devastating emergency, leaving families and the local community in shock.
The second fatal accident in less than a week has once again placed Barnegat Bay at the center of growing concerns over boating safety during one of the busiest times of the year.
A Routine Boat Ride Turned Into a Deadly Crash
According to New Jersey State Police, the boat was being operated by 39-year-old Kevin Wells of Warren Township. Despite the force of the impact, Wells managed to navigate the damaged vessel to a residence on Silver Lagoon Drive, where emergency crews rushed to help everyone on board.
First responders found one passenger, a 26-year-old man, with critical injuries. Despite emergency efforts, he later died. Authorities have not yet released his identity while relatives are being notified.
Three other passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials have not disclosed the extent of their injuries, while another occupant was evaluated following the crash.
