A Spokane man has been arrested on suspicion of intentionally starting the region’s largest wildfire as firefighters continue battling destructive blazes that have displaced thousands of residents.

A major breakthrough has emerged in the investigation into the devastating wildfires burning across eastern Washington after authorities arrested a Spokane man accused of intentionally starting one of the region’s largest fires.

The arrest comes as firefighters continue working around the clock to contain multiple wildfires that have scorched thousands of acres, destroyed homes and businesses, and forced tens of thousands of residents to leave their communities.

Suspect Arrested in Connection With Largest Fire

The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that Aaron F. Farinacci, 37, was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree arson. Investigators believe he is responsible for igniting the Old Trails Fire, currently the largest of the three major wildfires burning around Spokane.

According to officials, detectives from the Sheriff’s Office worked alongside investigators from the Washington Department of Natural Resources to determine where the fire began. Evidence gathered during the investigation, along with information provided by members of the public, led authorities to identify Farinacci as a suspect.

Law enforcement officers later executed search and arrest warrants before taking him into custody without incident. He has been booked into the Spokane County Jail and is expected to face court proceedings as the criminal investigation moves forward.

    Communities Face Widespread Damage

While the arrest marks an important step for investigators, it does little to ease the hardship facing residents across the region.
The wildfires have already burned through more than 10,000 acres, destroying or damaging well over a thousand structures, including homes, businesses and other buildings. Thousands of families remain under evacuation orders as emergency officials continue assessing the full extent of the destruction.
Many residents have returned to neighborhoods only to find damaged property or entire streets reduced to ashes, while others are still waiting for permission to safely return home.

    Firefighters Continue Difficult Battle

More than a thousand firefighters remain deployed across Spokane County as crews work to slow the spread of the fires and protect threatened communities.
Emergency responders have received some assistance from cooler temperatures, but officials warn that weather conditions could quickly change. Forecasts calling for stronger winds, rising temperatures and lower humidity later this week could create new challenges for containment efforts.
Fire officials say residents should continue following evacuation notices and avoid entering restricted areas, as conditions can change rapidly without warning.

    Investigation Into Other Fires Continues

Authorities emphasized that the arrest relates only to the Old Trails Fire. The causes of the other two major wildfires burning in the Spokane area remain under investigation, and officials have not announced any additional suspects.

Investigators also credited local residents whose observations helped provide valuable information during the inquiry, saying community cooperation played an important role in advancing the case.

    Recovery Expected to Take Time

Even as investigators focus on the criminal case, local officials say recovery from the wildfires will be a long process. Damage assessments are still underway, emergency shelters remain open for displaced families, and firefighters continue working to contain active fire lines.
For many Spokane residents, the arrest offers some answers about how one of the region’s most destructive fires may have started. However, with thousands still displaced and crews battling dangerous conditions, officials say the immediate priority remains protecting lives, containing the fires and helping affected communities begin the difficult road to recovery.
