The Mets promoted six players after trading away seven active-roster members at the trade deadline, marking a dramatic roster reset as young talent gets its biggest opportunity yet.

For most playoff contenders, the day after the MLB trade deadline is about introducing star acquisitions and renewing championship hopes. The New York Mets walked into Tuesday with a very different story to tell. Instead of welcoming proven veterans, the club arrived in Cleveland with six fresh faces after trading away seven players from its active roster, signaling that a new chapter has officially begun.
The dramatic roster makeover reflects just how quickly New York’s season has changed. What was once expected to be a postseason push has now become an opportunity to evaluate young talent and begin laying the foundation for the future.

Six New Faces Get Their Chance

With multiple roster spots opening before Monday’s trade deadline, the Mets filled them from within the organization rather than making headline-grabbing additions.

According to The Athletic’s Will Sammon, New York promoted right-handers Dedniel Núñez, Chayce McDermott and Xzavion Curry, left-handers Jefry Yan and Nate Lavender, and outfielder Cristian Pache ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians.

McDermott is the only member of the group who arrived through a deadline trade. The right-hander was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Triple-A catcher Ben Rortvedt after recently being designated for assignment. He made a brief appearance in the majors this season and posted a 4.55 ERA across 32 Triple-A outings before joining New York.

For the other five players, the promotion is the reward for months of hard work in Triple-A Syracuse and a chance to prove they belong at baseball’s highest level.

    Young Pitchers Earn Their Moment

Two of the biggest success stories belong to left-handers Jefry Yan and Nate Lavender, whose performances in the minors made their promotions difficult to ignore.

Yan has been one of the most dominant strikeout pitchers in minor league baseball this season, recording a 43.5% strikeout rate while posting a 3.24 ERA across Double-A and Triple-A. Lavender has also impressed, compiling a 40.2% strikeout rate and a 3.27 ERA in Triple-A.

Those numbers earned both pitchers an opportunity many minor leaguers spend years chasing. Now comes the biggest challenge showing they can produce the same results against major league hitters.

A Long Road Back for Núñez

Among the six call-ups, Dedniel Núñez’s promotion carries extra significance.

The right-hander returns after recovering from Tommy John surgery, completing a long rehabilitation process that included nine innings with Triple-A Syracuse, where he allowed three earned runs. Before the injury, Núñez had shown considerable promise, posting a 2.31 ERA over 35 innings with the Mets during the 2024 season.

His return gives New York another arm with major league experience at a time when the bullpen has undergone significant change.

    Bullpen Begins a New Chapter

The Mets’ relief corps looks dramatically different after the departures of Luke Weaver, Huascar Brazobán, Brooks Raley and A.J. Minter, all of whom were traded before Monday’s deadline.

President of baseball operations David Stearns acknowledged after the deadline that strengthening the bullpen will likely be an offseason priority. Until then, the organization is placing its trust in younger pitchers to bridge games from the starting rotation to closer Devin Williams.
Curry also rejoins the active roster after providing valuable long relief in his previous appearance, while Pache returns to the major leagues for the first time since September 2024 after spending the season with Triple-A Syracuse.

    Opportunity Now Takes Center Stage

The Mets’ deadline activity wasn’t simply about replacing departing players it represented a clear shift in direction. Rather than filling every opening with experienced veterans, the organization has chosen to see what its next wave of talent can offer.
The scale of the roster overhaul also highlights how quickly the club’s plans changed. Seven active-roster players were moved before the trade deadline, creating opportunities for players who have spent months working toward a chance in the majors. Every appearance over the remainder of the season will give the Mets valuable insight into which players could become part of the team’s long-term plans.
For Yan, Lavender, Núñez, McDermott, Curry and Pache, the coming weeks are about more than filling roster spots. Every inning pitched, every at bat and every appearance is an opportunity to prove they belong in New York beyond this season.

A New Chapter Begins in New York

Tuesday’s roster moves may not have delivered the blockbuster additions many Mets fans expected, but they offered a clear glimpse of where the organization is headed. After parting with seven active-roster players before the trade deadline, New York has chosen to give a new wave of talent its opportunity at the major league level.

For Dedniel Núñez, Jefry Yan, Nate Lavender, Chayce McDermott, Xzavion Curry and Cristian Pache, the weeks ahead represent far more than a roster promotion. They now have the chance to show they can contribute at baseball’s highest level and become part of the club’s long-term plans.Whether these six players emerge as everyday contributors or simply mark the beginning of a broader transition, one thing is already clear: the Mets have turned the page. The remainder of the season is no longer just about wins and losses it’s about discovering which players can help shape the franchise’s next competitive era.
