Dodgers President Rejects Rumors of Mark Walter Selling Team
The Los Angeles Dodgers have no plans to change hands.
Team president Stan Kasten made that clear Friday, pushing back against online speculation that billionaire owner Mark Walter might sell the Dodgers following his blockbuster deal involving the Los Angeles Lakers.
Before the Dodgers faced the Pittsburgh Pirates, Kasten gave reporters a straightforward answer when asked about the rumors.
“The Dodgers are not being sold. They’re not for sale,” he said, adding that no process has been started to sell the team.
For Kasten, the situation is simple: Walter remains committed to the Dodgers, and the team is focused on what happens on the field.
Why the Lakers Deal Started the Rumors
The speculation began after Walter agreed to sell his controlling interest in the Lakers to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger in a deal reportedly valued at $12.5 billion.
The enormous price tag immediately made the transaction one of the biggest stories in sports ownership. It also raised a natural question: if Walter was willing to move on from the Lakers, could the Dodgers be next?
Kasten says there is no reason to think that.
“I can’t tell you how important the Dodgers are to Mark,” he said.
Kasten acknowledged that Walter cared deeply about the Lakers as well, but described the opportunity to sell the NBA franchise as an extraordinary one that Walter decided to take.
That decision, he stressed, should not be confused with the future of the Dodgers.
What About the Investigation?
Questions about Walter’s business interests have also surfaced amid reports that federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission are examining parts of his business empire in tax related investigations.
Walter is cooperating with the investigation.
Kasten said he was not aware of anything involving the Dodgers being part of the probe and declined to discuss the matter further.
That means there is currently no indication from Kasten’s comments that the Dodgers are being prepared for a sale or that the team is involved in the reported investigation.
Walter’s Future With the Dodgers
Walter, 66, has been a major force behind the Dodgers’ recent success. During his ownership, the team has won three World Series championships in six seasons and continued to spend heavily on some of baseball’s biggest stars, including Shohei Ohtani.
Kasten praised Walter’s approach, saying his goal has consistently been to build a successful organization and give fans the best possible experience.
He also said Walter is not looking to sell his other sports holdings, including the Los Angeles Sparks, the Professional Women’s Hockey League and TWG Motorsports.
Walter usually stays out of the spotlight, with Kasten and other executives handling most public comments.
For Dodgers fans, though, Friday’s message was clear: the Lakers deal is not a sign that Walter is leaving Los Angeles baseball. The Dodgers are staying put.
