US Canada Trade Talks Collapse as 50% Tariffs Trigger Retaliation

US Canada trade talks collapsed after last minute negotiations failed, triggering 50% tariffs on Canadian goods and prompting Ottawa to promise immediate dollar for dollar retaliation.

The United States and Canada have failed to reach a last minute trade deal, pushing the two longtime allies into a fresh confrontation. Washington has now imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian products, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Ottawa will respond with matching tariffs.

The new U.S. duties took effect early Saturday after negotiations broke down just before a midnight deadline. The tariffs affect roughly 5% of Canada’s exports to the United States, adding another layer of tension to an already strained economic relationship.

    Last Minute Negotiations Fall Apart

The two countries had spent days trying to reach an agreement before the tariff deadline. Hopes for a compromise appeared to be growing earlier in the week, but those hopes disappeared during Friday night’s negotiations.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada declined to finalize the proposed agreement under terms Washington believed had been reached earlier. U.S. officials accused Ottawa of making new demands and backing away from previous commitments.

Carney gave a sharply different account.

The Canadian prime minister said last minute changes to the U.S. proposal were unfair and economically damaging. He suspended the negotiations and directed Canada’s negotiating team to return to Ottawa. No further talks have been scheduled.

The breakdown was particularly significant because officials from both countries had appeared close to a compromise only days earlier.

    Canada Promises to Hit Back

    Canada’s response was immediate.

Carney said Ottawa would match the U.S. tariffs “dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers and businesses. He also said the government would announce additional support for affected workers and companies in the coming days.

The move raises the possibility of a broader cycle of tariffs between the two countries. If the dispute continues, businesses on both sides of the border could face higher costs and greater uncertainty.

Steel, Autos and Lumber Remain Key Issues

The failed negotiations centered on several major industries, including steel, aluminum, automobiles and lumber.

Canada had been seeking concessions from Washington on tariffs affecting those sectors, but the two sides could not agree on the terms. The dispute now also raises questions about the future of the United States Mexico Canada Agreement, or USMCA, which is central to trade across North America.

Why This Matters Beyond the Tariffs

The products covered by the new duties represent a relatively small portion of Canada’s overall exports to the United States. The political consequences, however, could be considerably larger.

The U.S. and Canada exchanged about $880 billion in goods and services last year, highlighting how closely connected their economies are. A prolonged dispute could therefore affect businesses and industries far beyond the products directly targeted by the latest tariffs.

The confrontation also marks a significant change in a relationship that has historically been defined by close economic and security cooperation.

    What Happens Next?

For now, Washington and Ottawa appear further apart than they were just days ago.

The United States has moved ahead with the 50% tariffs, while Canada has committed to a dollar for dollar response. With negotiations suspended and no new talks scheduled, both governments now face pressure to decide whether to escalate the dispute or return to the negotiating table.

What started as a last minute effort to prevent another tariff escalation has instead produced a fresh trade confrontation between two of North America’s closest trading partners.
