Oscar-winning actress Julianne Moore sparked online debate after saying she no longer enjoys acting in films driven by violence, explosions and artificial drama.

Julianne Moore has come under fire online after saying she does not want to appear in movies filled with “explosions and guns,” comments that quickly triggered backlash from fans pointing to her own film career.

Speaking during a discussion at the Cannes Film Festival, the 65-year-old actress said she has become “less and less interested in tragedy” and emotionally disconnected from films that rely heavily on violence or exaggerated drama.

“I don’t like someone being murdered. I don’t like explosions and guns. I don’t like histrionics,” Moore said during the Women in Motion Talk hosted by Kering at Cannes.

The actress explained that she prefers stories with emotional depth rather than what she described as “easy stakes.”

“I don’t want to watch it,” she added, saying modern films sometimes create tension without genuine emotional substance underneath.

However, clips of the interview quickly spread across social media platform X, where critics accused Moore of hypocrisy because of her past roles in violent films.

Many users referenced her performances in movies such as Hannibal, where she played FBI agent Clarice Starling, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, which featured war and violence.

One user wrote that Moore had appeared in “countless movies with guns,” while another accused the actress of forgetting her own filmography.

Others defended Moore, arguing that actors are allowed to evolve artistically and personally over time.

Supporters praised her focus on emotionally grounded storytelling and agreed that modern entertainment often relies too heavily on violence and spectacle.

The controversy is not the first public backlash Moore has faced in recent years.

Her 2023 film May December also generated criticism from Vili Fualaau, whose controversial real-life relationship with his former teacher was widely compared to the film’s storyline.

Despite the criticism, Moore has remained one of Hollywood’s most respected actresses, winning the Academy Awards Best Actress award in 2015 for her performance in Still Alice.

She attended Cannes this year as the recipient of Kering’s Women in Motion Award, honoring women who have contributed to advancing female representation in cinema and society.
