A Long Branch police officer was stabbed while stopping a domestic violence attack that left a woman seriously injured. Authorities arrested the suspect as investigations continue.

    WEBDESK – NJNEWSLINE

A Long Branch police officer is recovering after being stabbed in the head while trying to protect a woman during a violent domestic dispute in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Authorities say the officer stepped in as a suspect allegedly attacked his former girlfriend with a knife, preventing what investigators believe could have become an even greater tragedy.

The incident has drawn widespread praise from law enforcement officials across New Jersey, who described the officer’s actions as courageous despite the serious injuries he suffered.

Domestic Violence Call Escalates Within Seconds

According to investigators, Long Branch police officers responded to a reported domestic violence incident at approximately 4:40 a.m. on Cleveland Avenue after receiving a 911 call. When officers entered the residence to assess the situation, the suspect allegedly launched a knife attack on his former girlfriend.

Police said the confrontation escalated almost immediately, leaving officers with little time to react as they rushed to protect the victim.

Officer Benitez Risked His Life to Stop the Attack

Authorities identified the injured officer as Patrolman Geter Benitez.

Investigators say Benitez heard the victim scream and immediately moved toward the suspect, tackling him in an effort to stop the assault. During the struggle, the suspect allegedly stabbed the officer in the head with a large knife.

Despite suffering a significant wound and losing a considerable amount of blood, Benitez continued assisting fellow officers until the suspect was successfully restrained and taken into custody.

Police believe his quick intervention prevented the woman from suffering even more serious injuries.

    Victim Receives Emergency Medical Treatment

The woman who was allegedly attacked sustained serious injuries before officers intervened.

Emergency medical teams treated both the victim and Officer Benitez at the scene before transporting them to hospital for further care. Officials have not released additional details about the woman’s condition but confirmed that both received immediate medical attention.

Authorities say the officer’s actions played a critical role in preventing the situation from becoming even more tragic.

    Suspect Taken Into Custody

Police identified the suspect as Faustino Leiva, who was arrested at the scene after officers, assisted by a bystander, managed to overpower him.

Prosecutors have filed several criminal charges, including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Officials noted that additional charges could be considered as the investigation progresses.

    Investigators Continue Gathering Evidence

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the Long Branch Police Department continue investigating the incident.

Detectives are reviewing witness statements, forensic evidence and physical evidence recovered from the scene to establish a complete timeline of what occurred. Authorities have not indicated whether further arrests or charges may follow.

Officer Leaves Hospital to Emotional Welcome

After undergoing emergency treatment and remaining under medical observation overnight, Officer Benitez was released from Monmouth Medical Center.

Fellow officers, first responders and supporters gathered outside the hospital to applaud as he left the facility. The emotional show of support reflected the respect many within New Jersey’s law enforcement community have for his bravery during the incident.

Domestic Violence Calls Remain Highly Dangerous

The attack has once again highlighted the risks police officers face while responding to domestic violence emergencies.

Law enforcement experts have long regarded domestic violence incidents as some of the most unpredictable situations officers encounter because emotions can escalate quickly and violence often erupts without warning.

Officials continue encouraging victims of domestic abuse to seek help immediately through emergency services and available support organisations.

    Community Praises Officer’s Courage

Residents and local leaders have expressed appreciation for Officer Benitez’s actions following the attack.

Messages shared across social media praised his willingness to place himself in danger to protect another person. Police officials also acknowledged the civilian who assisted officers during the struggle with the suspect.

Many residents described the officer’s actions as an example of courage and commitment to public safety.

    Search for Justice Continues

While the suspect is now in custody, investigators say their work is far from complete.

Authorities will continue analysing forensic evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing every aspect of the case before submitting the final investigation report to prosecutors.

Police say the investigation remains active and that every legal step will be followed to ensure accountability.

A Reminder of the Risks First Responders Face

The Long Branch stabbing serves as another reminder of the dangers police officers confront while responding to emergency calls.

Officials say the bravery displayed by Officer Benitez likely prevented a far worse outcome. As the legal process moves forward, the case continues to highlight both the importance of swift emergency response and the ongoing challenge of domestic violence incidents in communities across New Jersey.
