Governor Mikie Sherrill says New Jersey towns can extend bar hours during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to boost celebrations, tourism and local business activity statewide.

WEBDESK – NJNEWSLINE: New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill is encouraging municipalities across the state to consider extending bar operating hours during the 2026 FIFA World Cup as excitement builds ahead of matches at MetLife Stadium.

Speaking at Mulligan’s Pub in Hoboken on May 18, Sherrill highlighted new guidance from the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control allowing towns greater flexibility to adjust alcohol sales hours during the global tournament.

The governor also signed a proclamation formally notifying municipalities that they may temporarily loosen local alcohol ordinances while still ensuring responsible alcohol sales and public safety.

“New Jersey is home to so many vibrant communities, and the World Cup is a once-in-a-generation opportunity,” Sherrill said, adding that the move would help residents and tourists continue celebrations beyond the stadium.

Under New Jersey law, municipalities already have authority to set local hours for alcohol sales, while the state ABC oversees the regulation of alcoholic beverages statewide.

MetLife Stadium is scheduled to host eight FIFA World Cup matches in June and July 2026, including the tournament final on July 19, making New Jersey one of the major centers of global soccer celebrations next summer.
