She Was Charged With Killing Her Baby. The Truth Reveals a Double Standard Mothers Face

A New Jersey mother spent eight months in jail accused of murdering her infant daughter. Then the truth came out — and it exposed a troubling double standard.

A Baby Girl’s Short, Painful Life

Aaliyah Santiago lived just 103 days. The three-month-old from Lakewood, New Jersey, died in the spring of 2025, a day after her mother, Caitlin Gibson, called 911 because the baby had stopped breathing. An autopsy revealed the extent of what the infant had endured: a fractured skull with bleeding on the brain, broken ribs, a broken wrist, and a second skull fracture all in different stages of healing, pointing to a prolonged pattern of abuse.

Both Gibson and the girl’s father, Ruben Santiago, were swiftly charged with murder. For eight months, Gibson sat in jail accused of killing her own child.

A Wrongful Accusation Undone by a Confession

Ocean County prosecutors and a Superior Court judge now agree Gibson was a victim, not a perpetrator. She was cleared in January, after Santiago confessed to the killing and told authorities Gibson had no knowledge of the abuse. The charges against her were formally dismissed in May, once Santiago was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

At Santiago’s sentencing, Gibson sat quietly in the back of the courtroom as he, shackled and crying, apologized for what he’d done. She said nothing that day but later shared her story.

From “Monster” to Grieving Mother, Overnight

Santiago’s confession transformed how the public saw Gibson — but it couldn’t undo the eight months she’d already spent behind bars, unable to grieve or bury her daughter properly. “I miss being able to hold her,” Gibson said, her eyes filling with tears. “And talk to her. And feed her. And change her. Just everything, to be honest.”

Her attorney, Mitchell Ansell, described her as a caring, loving mother who endured what he called “hell with a capital H” before surviving through her own inner strength. He argues she was charged not for anything she did, but because, as a mother, prosecutors believed she “should have known” what was happening. “That’s really not enough to convict someone of murder,” Ansell said.

A History of Abuse She Says She Hides

Gibson and her lawyers say she also suffered domestic abuse at Santiago’s hands, though she never reported it to police. She has described being afraid of his explosive temper and walking on eggshells around him but said she never imagined he was capable of harming their children. Ansell noted how difficult it can be for victims to leave: “It’s kind of hard to leave when you have two kids. It’s kind of hard to leave when you have an abusive partner. And tragically, it ended like this.”

Gibson also recalled another frightening moment: the couple’s older daughter, now 3, was hospitalized as a newborn with broken ribs. At the time, Gibson believed the injuries may have been related to childbirth. In hindsight, she now sees the incident as eerily similar to what happened to Aaliyah, though no criminal charges were ever filed in that case.

A Pattern Experts Say Falls Unevenly on Mothers

Gibson isn’t the first woman to endure domestic violence only to be blamed when that violence extends to her children, even without her knowledge. Experts say this pattern disproportionately affects mothers rather than fathers, a reflection of the heightened societal expectation that mothers serve as their children’s primary protectors a standard rarely applied with the same force to fathers.

Now cleared of any wrongdoing, Gibson must rebuild her life under public scrutiny and her own private guilt, replaying the warning signs she believes, in hindsight, seem impossible to miss. She has said grappling with that question is a mental cycle she constantly tries to push away, even as she works to move forward.
