A dayslong search across New York came to an end Sunday when police captured 32-year-old Thomas David Ryan, who authorities had been seeking in connection with the death of his 70-year-old father and a fire that destroyed the Greenville home.
Ryan was located in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County after police received a tip about an apparently unoccupied Toyota Prius parked near State Route 990V. Investigators determined the vehicle was connected to the case and searched the surrounding area before taking Ryan into custody.
The arrest brought a tense manhunt to a close, but the investigation into what happened inside the Greenville home is still unfolding. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a possible motive or released full details about the charges Ryan may face.
Fire Revealed a Deadly Crime
The investigation began Thursday evening, shortly after 7 p.m., when emergency crews rushed to a home on Greenville Turnpike after reports of a fire.
Firefighters battling the flames eventually discovered a man dead inside the residence. He was identified as Robert Ryan, 70.
Investigators determined that the fire had been deliberately set and began treating the death as a homicide. Police then turned their attention to Thomas Ryan, who did not live with his father and had no other known current ties to the Greenville community.
Authorities also believed Ryan had left in a gray 2016 Toyota Prius belonging to his father, prompting investigators to widen the search beyond Orange County.
Surveillance Footage Became a Crucial Lead
As the search expanded, investigators appealed to residents for help reviewing home-security footage from the hours surrounding the fire.
A reported sighting of Ryan running from his father’s property gave investigators another detail to consider as they worked to trace his movements.
Police warned the public not to approach Ryan, describing him as potentially dangerous, while multiple law-enforcement agencies became involved in the effort to locate him.

A Daughter Grieves Her Father
For Robert Ryan’s daughter, Stephanie Coiro, the arrest cannot undo what her family has lost.
Coiro described her father as a deeply generous and dependable man who made people feel welcome and was always willing to help others. She said his death has left the family devastated.
She also said her brother had struggled with severe mental illness for years and had been off medication. Those statements are Coiro’s account; authorities have not publicly confirmed that mental illness played a role in the alleged crime.
According to Coiro, the family had feared a tragedy for years and repeatedly tried to find meaningful help for Ryan. She believes the difficulties her family encountered reflect broader problems in the mental-health system.
A Family Says the Warning Signs Were There
Coiro said her brother experienced his first serious mental-health episode at 16 and had spent years moving through treatment programs and periods of incarceration.
She described the family’s experience as a painful cycle in which they tried to get help but repeatedly encountered barriers.
Her comments have added a deeply personal dimension to an investigation that otherwise centers on a homicide, an intentionally set fire and a large-scale manhunt.
But for Coiro, the central loss is much more personal: her children have lost their grandfather, and she has lost the father she described as kind, steadfast and unwilling to abandon his son.
Arrest Ends the Search, Not the Questions
Police said Ryan has seven prior arrests in New York City and is on probation through April 2028. Investigators have not publicly released a motive, explained exactly how Robert Ryan died or detailed the charges Ryan will face.
The capture ends the immediate uncertainty over where the suspect was hiding. It does not end the questions left behind by the fire.
