Rebecca Bennett’s Democratic primary victory in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District has intensified Republican anxiety over one of the nation’s most competitive House races, as questions continue to swirl around incumbent GOP Rep. Tom Kean Jr. and his prolonged absence from public campaigning.
WEBDESK – NJNEWSLINE:
Bennett’s win in the Democratic primary has energized Democrats while deepening Republican concerns over Tom Kean Jr.’s health, political future, and vulnerability in a critical swing district.
According to a report by InsiderNJ, Democratic candidate Rebecca Bennett celebrated her primary triumph Tuesday night at the Green Knoll Grill in Bridgewater, with party supporters portraying her as their strongest opportunity yet to flip the Republican-held district.
The report described growing frustration within Republican circles over Kean’s limited public presence amid speculation about his health and whether he will ultimately seek reelection in November. One unnamed GOP source reportedly questioned the congressman’s prolonged absence, saying Republicans were increasingly alarmed by the uncertainty surrounding the campaign.
Kean later released a statement insisting he remained committed to reelection, saying he was recovering under medical supervision and expected to return to in-person work within weeks. He also pledged to disclose details about his medical condition at an appropriate time.
“I am more energized than ever to keep fighting for the people of New Jersey’s 7th District,” Kean said in the statement.
Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot and mother, has emerged as a prominent Democratic challenger in the district. During the primary campaign, she repeatedly criticized Kean, accusing him of avoiding direct engagement with voters.
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene sharply attacked Kean following Bennett’s victory, accusing him of putting partisan interests ahead of New Jersey residents.
“New Jersey deserves a servant leader like former Navy helicopter pilot and mom Rebecca Bennett,” DelBene said, adding that Bennett would focus on lowering costs, expanding healthcare access, and combating corruption in Washington.
The district has long been considered favorable terrain for Republicans, with an estimated voter registration advantage of roughly 20,000. However, Democrats believe national political dynamics — including the influence of President Donald Trump — could make the race increasingly competitive.
Trump recently endorsed Kean’s reelection bid, declaring his “complete and total endorsement” for the congressman. Yet some Republicans privately fear the endorsement could further complicate Kean’s standing in a politically divided district.
Political observers say Bennett’s victory now sets up what could become one of the most closely watched congressional races of the 2026 midterm election cycle in New Jersey.
