Storm Damage Leaves Thousands in the Dark
Thousands of Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) customers across New Jersey remain without electricity after a series of powerful storms caused widespread damage to the power grid.
Utility crews have been working around the clock to restore service after high winds, heavy rain and falling trees damaged power lines, utility poles and electrical equipment across several counties. Most customers have already had power restored, but thousands are still waiting for electricity to return.
More Than 300,000 Customers Regain Service
JCP&L said it has restored power to more than 300,000 customers since the storms swept across its service area.
At one point, approximately 200,000 customers lost electricity following severe thunderstorms that brought extensive damage across New Jersey. Restoration work continues in communities where repairs are more complex due to fallen trees, broken poles and damaged infrastructure.
Why Some Homes Are Still Waiting
Utility officials say restoration efforts follow a priority system designed to return power to the largest number of customers safely and quickly.
Crews first remove immediate hazards, including downed power lines and blocked roads, before repairing transmission lines, substations and equipment serving hospitals, emergency services and larger neighborhoods. Smaller outages affecting individual streets or homes are typically addressed later.
Difficult Repairs Slow Restoration
Officials say many remaining outages require extensive repairs because of severe storm damage.
Some locations need damaged utility poles replaced, while others require power lines to be rebuilt or fallen trees cleared before electricity can safely be restored. Difficult terrain and limited access have also slowed progress in some areas.
Customers Urged to Report Outages
The utility is reminding customers not to assume their outage has already been reported.
Residents without electricity are encouraged to report outages through official channels and monitor restoration updates for estimated repair times. Officials also recommend signing up for outage alerts to receive the latest information.
Safety Remains a Top Priority
Emergency officials continue urging residents to stay away from downed power lines, treating every line as if it is energized.
Motorists are also advised to use extra caution around repair crews and treat intersections with non-functioning traffic signals as four-way stops until electricity is restored.
Communities Continue Recovery Efforts
While significant progress has been made, restoration work remains ongoing in several areas affected by the storms.
Utility officials say additional crews from other regions and contractor teams have joined the response to speed up repairs. They thanked customers for their patience as restoration efforts continue.
Power Expected to Return Soon
JCP&L expects the majority of remaining customers to have service restored as repair work continues over the coming days.
Officials say restoration timelines may change depending on weather conditions and the extent of damage discovered during repairs, but crews remain focused on restoring electricity as safely and quickly as possible.
