New Jersey faces dangerous heat on Tuesday before powerful thunderstorms hit on Wednesday, bringing risks of damaging winds, hail, and flooding ahead of a surprisingly cool Memorial Day weekend.
WEBDESK – NJNEWSLINE: New Jersey residents are enduring the hottest stretch of the week on Tuesday, with temperatures surging into the mid-90s, prompting Heat Advisories and Air Quality Alerts across much of the state.
Forecasters warned the heat index could climb into the upper 90s, creating dangerous conditions, especially for seniors, children, and people with heart or lung problems. Officials urged residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and use air conditioning whenever possible.
The heat wave is expected to peak on Tuesday before conditions turn volatile on Wednesday. Meteorologists say another steamy day will quickly transition into widespread thunderstorms by evening, with risks including damaging winds, torrential rain, hail, and intense lightning.
While isolated storms are possible Tuesday evening, Wednesday’s storm system is expected to be much stronger and more widespread as a cold front pushes through the region.
The dramatic weather swing will also bring a sharp cooldown. Temperatures on Thursday and Friday are expected to drop into the 60s — nearly 30 degrees lower than earlier in the week — with cloudy skies and scattered showers returning spring-like gloom to the Garden State.
Early forecasts for Memorial Day weekend are also disappointing, with Saturday likely to bring chilly rain and highs only in the 50s. Conditions may improve slightly by Memorial Day Monday with drier weather and temperatures closer to 70 degrees.
